my legs are sore when i play drums..?
hi.. i am begginer at drums but i have picked it up very easily. ive only been playing for 4 months and can do techniques such as double stokes at fast speed, push pulls, gravity blasts (one hand rolls) etc…
but one thing i didnt pick up easy is playing bass drum really fast.. i know your not meant to play at blinding speed at start.. but im not. im playing slowly but my muscles get sore from playing it for about 5 minutes or so. i stretch too so i dont know why..
even when im air drumming in class my legs will get sore from doing it.. my teacher said i should do this so i build the muscle up but its not doing anything.. just making me sore.
can anyone tell me what im doing wrong? im playing heel up and heel down and im trying to get my legs to twitch to play fast.. when im practising by air drumming or just normal drums.
When you play drums (my first instrument), the best way to gain speed and be relaxed is to play with the ball of your feet at the front and the heel off the floor. When you play, you should push your feet against the bass pedal just like as if you were trying to push your feet up in the air with the ball of your foot. The weight of the leg on the way down will hit the bass pedal with the correct force. This way, you don’t need to apply pressure on the way down and will economize strength.
Another example is when you rest your leg on the ball of your feet with the heel off the floor, and you shake your leg up and down. If you apply enough pressure to lift the ball off the floor, you will then know that you are doing something correct.
Same for double-bass playing. Same technique for both legs.
