Across flat farm land via Arnhem to Hengelo for a rail open day sponsored by NS. All the fun of the fair, including a steam run by and then back via Utrecht to Rotterdam. In complete contrast we spend a morning at the CORUS steel works, the largest in the Netherlands, riding their internal rail system and viewing the steel industry at work. Ticket To Ride – The Railways Of Germany, The South (DVD) $20.93 The manifestations of these investments are now bearing fruit! Travel with Ticket to Ride to view Germany’s railways as they enter the new millennium. This three part documentary series starts with the south-from Köln to the Swiss border and across to Austria and the Czech Republic. We travel down the Rhein, still the major freight and passenger artery – but not for much longer- to view the trains which pass day and night in this international corridor. The best views are to be had from the river itself and Ticket to Ride takes you there, from Köln to Mainz. Then it’s on to the financial capital Frankfurt, the hub of the InterCity passenger business, which has a local transport network of breathtaking efficiency. The route of the high speed line which will link Köln and Frankfurt is examined from the air and the ground. Then from Frankfurt on to Ludwigshafen to look at German rail freight, a short hop to Karlsruhe, the city which pioneered the concept of running trams on main lines, and to the beautiful city of Freiburg where passenger and freight traffic stream past on their way to Switzerland. As an indulgence we have lunch at the Feldschlossen brewery, just in Switzerland, before heading for the Bodensee. Then across the sole of Holiday Germany to the capital of Bavaria-Munich. Munich is Germany’s favourite city and Ticket to Ride shows you why! Time for a look at the international passenger and freight traffic heading for Austria then on to Regensberg and Würtzburg. Back through Stuttgart to look at “Star 21” and across to Saarbrücken where we ride the Bombardier trams. On this tour of Southern Germany you will see the very latest technology, ICT tilting trains, double deck commuter stock, modern freight vehicles and class 101 locomotives plus some old favourites like the class 103, the icon of the German Railways in the 1970’s. A definitive series of films, lavishly illustrated and narrated by the BBC’s Jonathan Hewat. |

Ticket To Ride – Out And About Munich (DVD) $15.43 The guide is focused on helping with the practicalities of a visit and in particular with the local transport systems. Bavaria (Bayern) is Germany’s largest “Land” and Munich (München) is the Landeshauptstadt-the capital. It is also the Germans own favourite city! Ticket to Ride shows you why! We explore the city and become familiar with the urban transport system- trams, the metro (U Bahn) and the suburban railway-S Bahn. Firstly we get you down town from the new Franz-Josef Strauß International airport without paying £40 for the taxi fare! Then we look at places to stay and suggest a few out of the city-Landshut, Augsberg and Starnberger See. We explore the wonderful city centre and make a few trips in the metropolis- The Olympic Park and Tower (where we can look down upon the rail connected BMW Motor works as well as the city), the Nymphenburg Palace and that most recognisable icon of the beer capital of Europe -the Hofbräuhaus. Then it’s off to the ancient Danube (Donau) city of Regensberg for beer and bratwust and a river cruise to the German Parthenon -Walhalla. One hour further south east by EuroCity train is “ one of the most beautiful towns in the world” – Passau. Set in a unique location at the confluence of three rivers this German town on the Austrian border with Italian style architecture will charm you. In München culture vultures of all ages will find a museum to their taste, Ticket to Ride.. looks at the ultimate boys day out – the Deutsches Museum – which houses the world’s largest interactive transport and technology collection. As if Munich (München) and the Bavarian (Bayern) country side were not enough, our final day trip – why not make it longer, we did – is to Salzburg, Austria’s “gem”. We start from Hauptbahnhof, the great rail “turntable” of southern Germany, and on the way we have time to look at this busy international rail rote and watch passenger and freight trains pass through on their way to exotic destinations!. At Salzburg we take in the roundhouse, piggyback freight and motorail services before heading “down town”. Salzburg can be busy! Ticket to Ride shows you how to avoid the crowds and then we ride the ”Wasserbahn” -regrettably water powered no more-to the castle for the best view in town. A definitive series of films, lavishly illustrated and narrated by the BBC’s Jonathan Hewat. |

Ticket To Ride – Out And About Cologne (DVD) $17.43 It’s the variety that makes it so interesting, heavy rail passenger and freight, one of the largest LRT systems in Germany -shared with freight at several points- and classic street trams. The Hohenzollernbrücke is in the centre of it all, six tracks in constant use. To the south is the Südbrücke where freight trains pass every few minutes on their way to or from Gremberg yard. As a tourist you will need to get to know the S-Bahn and we make the run to Bochum for a visit to the Eisenbahnmuseum at Dahlhausen. Other visits made in the city include the chocolate museum- no dull lines of display cases this is very much a working museum!, 4711, Brühl, the tram museum and the city zoo! Each visit gives us the chance to try out the impressive public transport system. For our long day out we take the train to Koblenz, a fine city and one of the best for watching the ceaseless activity of the two Rhine railroads. We take the Sesselbahn to the castle and show you how to get the best view of the railways in town! It’s back to Cologne by KD Line steamer, great views of both rail banks, but we stop off at Königswinter to ride the Drachenfelsbahn for yet more stunning views. All this plus the run from Waterloo makes Out & About Cologne a must for rail based visitors to the city. |

We look at the coastal CORUS plant and the port of Amsterdam which shifts large quantities of coal to the Ruhr, and then head north to see the ACTS shuffles at work at Onnen and Leeuwarden. East this time to Delfzijl to see the chlorine trains, and other activity at the Nobel Chemie Park and waste trains to Germany.
