Oz – The Complete First Season $24.4 Rated: NRSynopsis: There is no Scarecrow, Tin Man, nor Cowardly Lion in this “Emerald City,” an experimental cell block of the Oswald Maximum Security Prison, a.k.a. “Oz.” The show — created by Homicide executive producer Tom Fontana — plays out each week like a vicious Beat poem from a psychopath. With no holds barred (literally), it focuses on the chaotic day-to-day routine of prisoners, guards, and administrators. The man behind the curtain is Tim McManus (Terry Kinney), a reform-minded optimist operating sometimes with, and sometimes against, Warden Leo Glynn (Ernie Hudson). In the debut season (1997) collected here, Oz flourished with tense, character-driven story lines built around the prison’s numerous inmates and fluctuating roster. Each episode is a dense soap opera with abstract interludes of narration by hobbled inmate Augustus Hill (Harold Perrineau) — effectively a Greek chorus in the slam-angry form of an urban poet. Viewers learn early on that Oz is a virtual tinderbox of brutal competing gangs, corrupt internal politics, and despair: a place where one suspects a Survivor season would fail to go the distance. Among the famous faces in this first season are future Sopranos costar Edie Falco (as a corrections officer) and, in a role reversal, Homicide’s Detective Paul Falsone (Jon Seda) as a prisoner. This collection includes all eight episodes from the groundbreaking first season: “The Routine” — Several new inmates arrive to meet Oz’s diverse, gang-banging population of Latinos, Muslims, Westies, Aryans, and wise guys. Among the newcomers is Muslim activist Kareem Said (Eamonn Walker), who seems destined to start a prisoner riot. The Sopranos – The Complete First Season $31.22 Rated: NRSynopsis: A film has only one chance to make its impression, but a television show can add layers to itself every seven days. Most programs don’t take advantage of that, but few have done better than HBO’s The Sopranos. The first season, released in a four-DVD set, allows one to savor The Sopranos, which quickly became one of the most confident and insightful shows on television. Early on, David Chase’s portrait of the private and professional life of New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano teeters on the edge of parody. Tony himself, artfully played by James Gandolfini, is believably complicated and conflicted, emerging as a family man (in both the literal and colloquial senses of the word) depressed by the slow rot of his own inner life. His sessions with psychotherapist Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) help in some ways (through a new understanding of his family’s importance, and a Prozac prescription) and hurt in others (his continued “anti-social” behavior and an intense case of doctor-patient transference), but never go over-the-top. It’s Tony’s fellow gangsters who feel exaggerated at first, though the crew develops quickly in the first season from well-acted stereotypes who spend a lot of time quoting Al Pacino movies into legitimately multi-dimensional characters. These supporting performances, most notably by Michael Imperioli and Vincent Pastore, give the show’s mafia moments the juice they need to transcend parody. The other Soprano family members — an upper-middle class nuclear unit that worries about upper-middle class things — is that rare portrayal of suburban life: one drawn with care and humor without condescension, and with attention to regional and ethnic detail. Ultimately, though, what makes The Sopranos so good is its unfailing dedication to its characters. Their lives are fully and richly imagined, steeped in a deep understanding of suburbia by writers and directors who know what they’re doing and care about doing it intelligently. No show since Homicide: Life on the Street has created so nuanced a world; one packed with real ironies, ambiguities, and quiet truths. The Flintstones – The Complete First Season $31.28 Rated: NRSynopsis: Here’s a page right out of television history: Joseph Hanna and William Barbera took animation out of the Saturday-morning Stone Age and into prime time, where The Flintstones reigned as animation’s first family (until a Neanderthal named Homer Simpson and his brood came along). This four-disc set contains all 28 episodes from the inaugural season, as well as such retro-nuggets as original series promos and commercial plugs. While the battle of the sexes that has been a sitcom staple since Don Ameche and Frances Langford had at it as The Bickersons during radio’s golden age, The Flintstones was built on that formidable chunk of TV bedrock known as The Honeymooners. The Flintstones added a fun prehistoric slant on modern life, complete with clever, crude forebears of now-common appliances (you’ve got to feel for those poor overworked birds whose beaks served as washing machines, sewing needles, and record players). Fan favorite episodes include “The Monster from the Tar Pits,” in which Fred stands in for Hollyrock idol Gary Granite (name-plays were always the show’s strong suit); “The Tycoon,” with Fred in a dual role as industrialist doppelgänger J. L. Gotrocks; “In the Dough,” in which Fred and Barney stand in for their wives on a television bake-off; and “Fred Flintstone: Before and After,” in which Fred must lose 25 pounds in a month. Flintstones fans will lament the absence of the classic theme song, which debuted in Season 2. Pebbles and Bam-Bam are likewise in the future, as is that alien shark-jumper the Great Gazoo. Dino doesn’t even arrive until Episode 18, “The Snorkasaurus Hunter.” But it’s fun to go back to the dawn of Fred and see how this groundbreaking series evolved. Branded – The Complete First Season $20.46 Rated: NASynopsis: Following in the footsteps of THE RIFLEMAN, Chuck Connors continued to epitomize the persona of the old west loner in this fondly remembered series. Although BRANDED only lasted two years, it gained a cult of devoted fans who found the show’s unique perspective as thrilling as its gunfighting action. Connors’ role as Jason McCord was an intriguing figure, the lone survivor of a Native American massacre who was dishonorably discharged and (in contrast to most legendary western characters) is seen as “yellow” by those who he meets in his frontier travels. Despite his reputation as “the coward of Bitter Creek,” McCord’s relationship with President Ulysses S. Grant (William Bryant) has remained strong and the roaming gunman is often called upon for secret government missions. The characterization of the government and the references to the Civil War give the program interesting political undertones. The misunderstood lead character comes across many familiar faces in this collection of the entire first season, and guest appearances include Jay Silverheels, John Carradine, June Lockhart, Chad Everett, and Cesar Romero. Sixteen episodes are included. |

That changed abruptly in 1994, when ER debuted and turned the messy life-and-death realities of a fictional Chicago hospital into the most-watched drama of the decade. The groundbreaking first season redefined the medical genre with raw emotions and staccato cuts that heightened the harrowing action. Part of the show’s initial draw was sheer star power; besides Clooney, the original cast included Anthony Edwards, Julia Margulies, and Eriq LaSalle, along with A-list guest stars from Ving Rhames to Quentin Tarantino (who also directed an episode). But what really hooked viewers was ER’s unflinching look at what makes people tick, from the patients on the operating table to the surgeons wielding the defibrillators. Although neatly constructed, Smallville’s first season is not immune to the monster-of-the-week syndrome. But like Buffy and The X-Files before it, the show lays the groundwork for story arcs destined to haunt future seasons. Particularly compelling is Clark’s relationship with Lex Luther (Michael Rosenbaum), son of the town tycoon, whose life he saves in the opening episode. As every fan knows, young Lex will grow up to be the archest of Superman villains. But in Smallville, his fate is by no means sealed. Luther’s struggle to escape the grip of his evil father and salvage his own humanity is a superheroic battle in itself. Popular – The Complete First Season $19.91 Rated: TV14Synopsis: Nip/Tuck creator-writer Ryan Murphy’s first series was this quirky, short-lived 1999 dramedy for the WB network about teens navigating Kennedy High School. Popular features Carly Pope as Samantha MacPherson, an unpopular brainiac who would rather write for the school paper than do anything else. Her counterpart is Brooke McQueen (Leslie Bibb), a blonde who, as the leader of the school-ruling cheerleader squad The Glamazons, is very popular. The two are sworn enemies until Sam’s mom, Jane (Lisa Darr), marries Brooke’s father, Mike (Scott Bryce), forcing the girls to become sisters. This turns life upside down for Sam’s clique, which includes handsome-but-dorky Harrison (Christopher Gorham), the obligatory fat girl with the cheerleader dream, Carmen (Sara Rue), and misfit Lily (Tamara Mello). The sudden sisterhood also throws things out of whack for Brooke’s pals, including the Glamazon co-captain, deliciously evil Nicole (Tammy Lynn Michaels); the spoiled and air-headed Mary Cherry (Leslie Grossman); the star quarterback and Brooke’s boyfriend, Josh Ford (Bryce Johnson); and Josh’s football buddy Mike, a.k.a. Sugar Daddy (Ron Lester). The series had a terrific offbeat quality to it, lacing its typical dramatic tales of high school angst with moments of hilarious comedy. The two-part series opener, “The Phantom Menace” and “Mo’ Menace, Mo’ Problems,” introduces the characters and sets in sharp contrast a powerful underlying theme: Carmen is on a quest to become a Glamazon, while Brooke worries Josh is turning into a geek when he wants to be in a play. Strict biology teacher Bobbi Glass (Diane Delano) begins her reign of terror in “Under Siege” when she demands that Lily carry around the dead frog she refuses to dissect. Carmen invites all the cool girls to her 16th birthday party in “Slumber Party Massacre,” with disastrous results. The homecoming queen is chosen in “Queen B.,” but not before Cherry Cherry (guest star Delta Burke) leads her daughter’s campaign. And Harrison’s lesbian mother (Alley Mills) is introduced in “Wild Wild Mess,” an episode that won the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Award for Media. Keep an eye out for Chad Lowe, Erik Estrada, and Peggy Lipton, all of whom guest-star in Season 1. Not your typical teen drama, Popular turned the anguish of high school into an eccentric mix of comedy, drama, romance, and camp that deserves multiple viewings to truly appreciate its originality. Everwood – The Complete First Season $21.34 Rated: NASynopsis: As pro-family as 7th Heaven but less preachy, this instantly involving serial drama is just what the doctor ordered. Everwood deals with a shattered family in crisis: Dr. Andy Brown (Treat Williams) is a famed neurosurgeon but a neglectful father; and when his beloved wife is tragically killed (offscreen) in a car accident, he impulsively relocates with his two children to the mountain town of Everwood, Colorado (population: just over 9,000). At the heart of this first season is Dr. Brown’s estrangement from his bitterly resentful teenage son, Ephram (Gregory Smith), but there are enough tangled subplots and conflicting loyalties to make Everwood a welcome destination for return visits. The arrogant Dr. Brown sets up a free practice, earning the enmity of the town’s heretofore sole practitioner, prissy Dr. Abbott (Tom Armandes, who elevates what could have been a one-note character, à la M.A.S.H’s Frank Burns). Meanwhile, Ephram is befriended by, and develops the requisite unrequited crush on, Dr. Abbott’s daughter, Amy (Emily VanCamp). Amy’s boyfriend, Colin, lies in a coma, and she wants Dr. Brown to operate on him. This odd triangle becomes even odder when Colin is revived. Dr. Brown also has to awaken to his youngest daughter, Delia’s, own coming-of-age. Adding to the local color are some real characters who might have been equally at home in Picket Fences or Northern Exposure. Dr. Brown’s nurse, Edna (Debra Mooney), is a crusty Vietnam vet who happens to be Dr. Abbott’s mother (we’d tell you why he fired her, but we don’t want to give away all of this series’ secrets). Like 7th Heaven, Everwood dives earnestly into hot-button issues. In “Episode 20,” for instance, a local teen and her father arrive in Dr. Brown’s office seeking advice on terminating the girl’s pregnancy. Labeled “Parental Discretion Advised” for its initial WB airing, the program’s a thought- and discussion-provoking gem. Donald LiebensonTreat Williams starred in this warm-hearted family drama series as workaholic neurosurgeon Andrew Brown. Upon the death of his wife, Andrew realized that he had been sorely neglecting his children in favor of his work. As means of compensation, he moved his family out of Manhattan and into the mountain community of Everwood, CO, where he opened up a free clinic. Andrew’s kids, 15-year-old Ephram (Gregory Smith) and nine-year-old Delia (Vivien Cardone), were at first resentful over being uprooted, while Everwood’s resident doctor Harold Abbott (Tom Amandes) regarded Andrew as a threat to his own livelihood. Assembled by several former Dawson’s Creek hands, Everwood made its WB Network debut in 2002.
