The right amount of thermal paste and temperature for my CPU?
I have applied a full layer of Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste on my heat sink (Cooler Master V8) – then placed it onto my Intel i7 920 processor (Thus, without paste on the CPU itself). The performance so far gives me a stable temperature around 40 – 50 degrees shown by SpeedFan while system is on low cpu usage. Since the manual given by Intel says to keep the temperature below 39 degrees Celsius, I was wondering if my temperature is too high (even with the Fan speed controller at max). Another side note is that my V8 Cooler has been placed upside down. Since the structure of the cooler appears to be similar on both sides, I figured it might not be an issue. Was my way of placing the paste on the heat sink correct? And is the temperature I’m getting a common figure?

Well how much is a full layer, because with arctic silver 5 you only need real small amount of thermal paste (maximum amount around of 0,05 mm, see-trough).
Also you should have had put the paste on the cpu not the heat sink, also be aware of the fact that the paste should only touch the processor and heat-sink, and not anything else (motherboard, metal around the processor) as arctic silver 5 is electrical conductive and could over time harm your hardware if it touches anything else but the processor and heat-sink.
I don’t know about putting the cooler upside down but I think that the appliance of the paste could have been wrong which could explain the high temperatures (too much arctic silver 5 applied = high temperatures).
