Do you think it’s morally right for a convicted felon to be marked for life?

There was a story in the news this week about a guy in Queensland, Australia who was going to get a bravery award for his efforts to help his community during the recent floods. I can imagine this guy would have been really looking forward to the award ceremony, he probably went out and bought himself a suit and tie (probably the first suit and tie he ever owned) and told all his friends and family about it. But then a couple of days before the ceremony, he got phone call telling him his award had been cancelled. It turned out he was a convicted rapist and armed robber who had served 12 years in jail and the Queensland government didn’t think a convicted felon deserved to get an award, no matter how brave his actions were.

What do you think are the moral implications for this? Do you think it sends a bad message to other convicted felons in society? Do you think it tells them, “You’re marked for life; you will never be a trusted member of society again, no matter what you do”?
