how is timber sold to the lumber mill, by the foot or by the weight
A majority of the timber mills purchase by weight, however, based on the following source there are specialty mills that still purchase by the square foot.

In addition, some logging trucks are equipped with on board scales to measure what is being taken out on a load (and also for safety reasons-not overloading the semi). In mountainous country this is extremely important.

**Edit-I was going to let this go, but, mills do not benefit from heavier “wet” logs. This does not guarantee a lack of infestation and for some mills it doesn’t matter because the beetles that bore into the trees only bore into the cambium, not to the denser wood. Any trees found infested with wood ants typically are not harvested anyway because they will destroy a tree, but usually a tree that is already dying and too “punky” to harvest anyway.
Heavier, “wet” logs cost the mill as it increases time in the drying kilns to cure the lumber. They can’t sell them until they’ve been dried.
How do I know? I worked as an insurance underwriter for the logging industry where I live.
