Lou Antonio

135-140 lb Super Tournament 1st round. Who wins these fights?
Aaron Pryor vs Jackie “Kid” Berg
Tony Canzoneri vs Carlos Ortiz
Nicolino Locche vs Lou Ambers
Wilfred Benitez vs Duilio Loi
Roberto Duran vs Lou Ambers
JC Chavez vs Packey McFarland
Benny Leonard vs Antonio Cervantes
Alexis Arguello vs Pernell Whitaker
I want to apologize, i must be slipping as I forgot the great Joe Gans in this tournament so shame on me. Thanks for pointing that out DT!
I really did goof on this one gang. I’ve got Ambers twice in this tournament. Mustt of been in a hurry last night or too tired. I will do this one again when I have my thinking hat on.
Before I start, may I ask… where is the great Joe Gans? I honestly think he could beat every fighter you have mentioned.
Aaron Pryor vs Jack “Kid” Berg:
Pryor was a great fighter, and even better, a very exciting fighter. He threw many punches in his fights compared to how many his opponents threw. Pryor also had a great chin despite being stopped in his only loss. He was also a great puncher, and at point in this career he actually had something like 26 straight stoppage victories. He piled on the pressure in his fighters and sometimes even great fighters (Arguello) couldn’t even handle all that pressure. Berg had a good chin and some power. He wasn’t really, in my opinion, as great as Pryor. He didn’t have as good a chin, nor as good power and also didn’t have the heart or stamina that Pryor had. I think Pryor wins this by late TKO, probably somewhere around the 12th.
Tony Canzoneri vs Carlos Ortiz:
Canzoneri was your typical boxer-puncher. In my opinion his boxing skills are underrated. He didn’t have exceptional power but his skills and GREAT chin made up for that. Tony beat many great fighters, including two that are in this tournament (Berg and Ambers). Ortiz was a great, great fighter. He beat many quality opponents of his time. He had good power and a great chin. He always came to fight as well. He was also one the the very few people to beat Duilio Loi. I think this is a very, very close match-up. I think Ortiz would be too active and more aggressive than Tony and would win a UD.
Nicolino Locche vs Lou Ambers:
Locche’s record speaks for itself. Over 115 wins and only 4 losses. Locche is, most notably, a great defensive fighter. He could make even the best opponents look silly. Some people say he used his defensive skills so often to hide a weak chin. However, I don’t think that is true. I have seen in one of his fights (I forgot which one) where he got hit with a good shot and shook it off. Locche didn’t have great power but defense made up for it in my opinion. Ambers also lacked somewhat in the power department, but made up for it in chin and skill. He boxed with the best and could often out-box the best. This is most notable in his most prolific victory, which was over Armstrong. I think Locche frustrates Ambers and I would go as far to say that he would actually out-box Ambers and would win a SD.
Wilfred Benitez vs Duilio Loi:
Benitez was a clever fighter with good power and an average chin. His careful fight with Leonard showed how clever he could be (although he lost the fight). Benitez has good defense, but is not one the greatest defensive fighters of all time (as I have seen him ranked before). He wouldn’t really have to be too defensive against Loi anyway. Loi didn’t have amazing power but had a good chin, and was a very active fighter. He would throw a lot of punches to make sure that he got the decision victory (as it often went that far). Loi is also probably the great Italian fighter of all time. I think this is a close fight and I think I agree with Mark W… Loi wins it by decision, a UD though.
Roberto Duran vs Lou Ambers:
Why have you got Ambers twice? Anyway, it’s still a good match up. However I think Roberto Duran was an all-put beast at Lightweight. Duran was a great puncher and had a great chin. He also had a lot of heart and great work rate and stamina. Ambers would try box Duran, but Duran would pile on the pressure and would win a wide UD. There is the possibility of Duran stopping Ambers, but I think Ambers survives and goes the distance to lose on the cards.
Julio Cesar Chavez vs Packey McFarland:
The battle of the undefeated-for-a-long-time fighters
. I think Chavez has nearly every advantage over McFarland. Power is in Chavez’s favor but not by much. There is much debate with regards to McFarland single loss. If it is eventually found to be a lie, then McFarland would be 104-0. However, Chavez beat the better competition and was overall more skilled. I think he would outwork McFarland win a UD. I doubt any stoppages occur, as both have great chins.
Benny Leonard vs Antonio Cervantes:
Leonard has a power advantage and a stamina and heart advantage. Cervantes has good power but a better chin than Benny’s. Leonard is more skilled though. Although Cervantes has the size advantage, I still think Benny is good enough and skilled enough to beat the bigger fighter. Cervantes was tough, but Benny was, arguably, tougher. I think Benny is more active and would be able to knock out Cervantes in around the 8-10th rounds.
Alexis Arguello vs Pernell Whitaker:
This is my favorite match-up of the lot. Arguello is the definition of a boxer-puncher. His right hand is his best, and hardest punch. Whitaker made many world champions look like fools with his unmatched defensive abilities. Whitaker defense is the best not only because he moves his head (like Mayweather and Locche), but he moves his body defensively EXTREMELY effectively (unlike M
