Nixon, Kissinger, and U. S. Foreign Policy Making by Siniver, Asaf Edition ILL, 1 $32.49 The Machinery of Crisis examines for the first time the important role of crisis management in the making of U.S. foreign policy during the Nixon-Kissinger years. Notorious for their tight grip on the machinery of U.S. foreign policy, the book offers a critical account of the manner in which the president and his national security advisor dominated the structures and processes of foreign policy making. The Kissinger Saga $8.33 No interviews about my private life’ has always been Henry Kissinger’s response to curious journalists. But journalist Evi Kurz from Furth, the Kissingers’ home town in southern Germany, proposed a family portrait and eventually won the trust of both brothers. This is the story of two Americans of German-Jewish descent: one of them a key figure in Cold War diplomacy and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, the other a top businessman – two lives which are exemplars of the American dream. When Henry was born in 1923 and Walter in 1924 the Kissingers had for decades been part of a flourishing Jewish midde class in Furth, a market town in northern Bavaria. Evi Kurz describes the gradual but remorseles destruction of this community in the 1930s; the Kissinger family’s decision to flee to London and then New York in 1938; the war years in America; and the hugely successful careers in postwar America of both brothers, who always remembered their home and roots in a small German town. |

Nixon And Kissinger $7.19 With the publication of his magisterial biography of John F. Kennedy An Unfinished Life Robert Dallek cemented his reputation as one of the greatest historians of our time. Now in this epic joint biography he offers a provocative groundbreaking portrait of a pair of outsize leaders whose unlikely partnership dominated the world stage and changed the course of history. More than thirty years after working side-by-side in the White House Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger remain two of the most compelling contradictory and powerful men in America in the second half of the twentieth century. While their personalities could hardly have seemed more different they were drawn together by the same magnetic force. Both were largely self-made men brimming with ambition driven by their own inner demons and often ruthless in pursuit of their goals. At the height of their power the collaboration and rivalry between them led to a sweeping series of policies that would leave a defining mark on the Nixon presidency. Tapping into a wealth of recently declassified archives Robert Dallek uncovers fascinating details about Nixon and Kissinger’s tumultuous personal relationship and the extent to which they struggled to outdo each other in the reach for achievements in foreign affairs. Dallek also brilliantly analyzes their dealings with power brokers at home and abroad-including the nightmare of Vietnam the unprecedented opening to China dÉtente with the Soviet Union the Yom Kippur War in the Middle East the disastrous overthrow of Allende in Chile and growing tensions between India and Pakistan-while recognizing how both men were continually plotting to distract the American public’s attention from the growing scandal of Watergate. With unprecedented detail Dallek reveals Nixon’s erratic behavior during Watergate and the extent to which Kissinger was complicit in trying to help Nixon use national security to prevent his impeachment or resignation. Illuminating authoritative revelatory and utterly engrossing Nixon and Kissinger provides a startling new picture of the immense power and sway these two men held in changing world history. |

President Kissinger $1.19 The very last book ever published by Maurice Girodias (apart from his own memoirs.) President Kissinger, from the short-lived Freeway Press, is a futuristic tale of what-might-be, as the great Henry leads us to one-world government through communism. Included in the mix are many of Kissinger's loves, revolutions in Africa, the Middle East, war with China, peace with the USSR, and finally all brought together under the blanket of the UN. Additional: Perhaps for its fictionalized accounts of "Kissinger's" many loves, shortly after this novel's publication Maurice found himself in the middle of a drug-sting operation by the feds on a harbor in the NY/NJ area. He wasn't quite deported, and his wife of the time forgave him for going there to meet a young woman in the first place, but he never really worked again stateside, returning to Paris after the divorce. An odd end to an odd career. |
